Major Changes

Service Pack 14

As previously notified, we have applied Service Pack 14 to live DARS today. This service pack, the first for about seventeen months, contains fix for the Query Node Performance problem.

TONE project

You should be aware of the TONE project: for those of you who are not, it is a project to design and implement a replacement core network for the collegiate University. Some indication of the scale of TONE is that the infrastructure consists of over 100,000 devices, connected by 300km of optical cable, and it handles all IT communications for the University, including 16 million emails per week. Further information about TONE can be found at http://www.it.ox.ac.uk/project-portfolio/oxford-network-evolution-tone. Different University systems are being moved over to the new infrastructure, and I am writing to tell you that DARS, along with other business systems such as Student Systems, Financial and HR, have been moved to the new infrastructure in two stages. The first move took place on 29 November: the second move was completed on 20 February.

DARS news and features

New name format

We have introduced a new name format, [Title] [Firstname]. This will be particularly useful for use in conjunction with the mane DARS constituents with Knighthoods and Damehoods, which formerly had to be defined using custom name formats. See also the ‘Correct Form’ paragraph in the Reminders section below.

Amendments to the SITS feed

We have worked with colleagues in the Student Systems Support Centre to make a number of changes to the way data on current students is passed into DARS. This has resulted in greatly improved population of matriculation year, college affiliation, and expected completion date. We are aware that one of the main causes of dissatisfaction is the use of excessive capitalisation for student addresses. Since many of these student addresses have been entered by students themselves, our recommendation remains the same – please contact the student and request that they record their address appropriately using the self-service features.

Reminders

Correct Form

When communicating with people, it is very important to get their name right! Some of our most influential and significant supporters have titles such as ‘Sir’, ‘Lady’ and so on – for these people, there are particular rules for how they should be addressed. The Donor Relations Team within the Development Office have put together a Crib Sheet outlining the correct salutations and ways to address such people; both printable and on-screen versions can be found at https://www.advancingoxford.ox.ac.uk/sharedresources - look for the ‘Correct form’ bullet.
