Fundraising Preference Service: Process for recording opt outs in DARS

In 2017, the Fundraising Regulator launched the Fundraising Preference Service. The FPS provides members of the public with the ability to opt out of fundraising from UK charities.

When a member of the public registers with the FPS, the Fundraising Regulator will notify the charity and provide details of the individual so that internal records can be updated with the opt-out.

For colleges: If an individual opts-out of fundraising from one of the colleges, that college will be notified by the FPS directly. As the colleges are independently registered charities, it is the responsibility of each college to update DARS with the relevant Solicit Code opt-out (see the instructions below for more details on which codes to use and when).

For departments: As the central university is collectively recognised as a single charity, the FPS opt out notifications will be sent directly to and processed by the DARS Support Centre. No action is required by central university DARS users.

The FPS requests will come in with ‘type’ information along with the opt-outs. This ‘type’ indicates whether the individual is expressing a wish not to receive fundraising communications by post, email, telephone, SMS: or all of the above (a ‘Global’ opt out).

ImportantInfo.jpg Important: As Kellogg and St Cross are recognised as societies of the University according to the statutes, the solicit codes added will reflect this. Please continue including the relevant suppressions in mailings.

How this is used in mailings:

The addition of this solicit code will then add the affected records to the DARS suppressions queries. You simply have to select the relevant suppression from the query node Selections>SUPP COLL System Suppressions, or SUPP OXUN System Suppressions and drag the relevant suppression over to the filter box. You must select No when asked to ‘exists in…’ the suppression.
